6 Questions with Rebecca Cohen Creator of Gyno-Star

As I’ve mentioned before, InkOutbreak is a website that has led me to many of the web comics that I enjoy today. Along with http://childpsychiatryassociates.com/treatment-team/kent-kunze I am Arg! And Legacy Control, I also found the wonderful web comic Gyno-Star. Gyno-Star is written and illustrated by Rebecca Cohen and does not disappoint. Rebecca tells stories in arch form, while still being able to express herself comedically in every installment. What drew me to Gyno-Star was that this was the first feminist comic done with great humor. I find myself laughing as she makes light of serious topics while fluidly shedding some light on them. As I point out in the interview, it’s not just her writing, but also her artwork that I enjoy. It’s very Disney-like to me and a great display of a non-sexist looking super hero.

The OG: This world has many web comics and not too many strong female characters. What made you decide that it was finally time to create a character like Gyno-Star and Little-Sappho (my personal favorite)?

Rebecca: When I created Gyno-Star, I wasn’t necessarily setting out to redress the gender imbalance in comics or anything like that. I’m female, so I like female superheroes. And I’m much better at drawing women than men. When I was in high school I couldn’t draw a convincing male character to save my life. So the superheroes that I drew in the margins of my chemistry notes were all female. 6 Questions with Bearman Creator Of Bearman Comics

When I first found Twitter and started following some web comics I saw that each of them would recommend Bearman Comics every Follow Friday. I just kept thinking who the hell is this Bearman? I started reading his comics and grew pretty fond of them. In what takes me 6 panels to tell this man can does it in one. If you look around the web comic community you will find that Bearman supports the big and small with his religious commenting, Retweets, Google plusing, and possibly trading kayaks for a casual encounter just to support other webcomics on Craig’s list. It’s rare to find such great support in an angry jaded internet world.

Bearman also handles political topics without being ham fisted and over the top as most political cartoonists do. Head over to Bearman Comics after you read this; his blogs are just as entertaining as his comics and he’s a hell of a guy.

The OG: You’re a big supporter of other web comics. What is it that makes you enjoy the medium?

Bearman: As a kid you grow up reading the comics in the newspaper.  The problem is that as you age the jokes remain targeted to the same age so it begins to lose appeal. When I first discovered webcomics, I was amazed at the number and style of voices in the comics.  Even the all age’s ones have a little more edge.  There is something that appeals to everyone.  I am more of a short form, hit me between the eyes with the humor and then let me move on kind of guy.  If you are going to go long form, I want every update to be funny.  George Ford of Addanac City and Aidan Casserly of Scapula do that well.

6 Questions with Javis Ray Creator Of Legacy Control

Much like I am Arg! I came upon Legacy Control about 4 months ago. Its humor and art style was everything that I love about the web comic strip medium. After reading every new comic from the writer/artist Javis Ray I think “Shit that was brilliant, why couldn’t I think of that?”  I’ll also allow his answer for the final question since nobody can beat a Super Saiyan.

The OG: When and why did you decide to enter the crowded realm of web comics?

LC: I had wanted to do traditional comics since I could hold a pencil, which happened to coincide with when scantily clad comic heroines started to make my wee wee tingle. I grew up, went to art school, and realized I didn’t have the attention span to do long form stuff, or for the meticulous detail traditional comics oft have. I naturally migrated towards cartooning, and traditional syndicated strips. Once I learned how few strips actually become syndicated, I pretty much gave in to the fact that I was going to be a graphic designer. I am embarrassed to say, I only found Penny Arcade 5 years ago, and didn’t even realized that  webcomics was an option. So about 2 years ago (a little more) I started working on getting Legacy Control crackin’. I finished 40 strips before I launched, and they all hit the web at once on April 25th 2010.
