I think it’s important to remember one thing about Gallagher. He wasn’t just a goofball prop comic who smashed watermelons apropos of nothing. He was a mean-spirited bully who smashed watermelons as the punchline to jokes that came at the expense of people who deserved it the least. He smashed watermelons to express his fury at things like fairness, decency, equality, and a sense of responsibility for your fellow human. Now that the mallet has left comedy’s many stages, I hope some of those things find their way back to it.
