Joe Kubert (1926-2012)
Stralsund I was on my way home when I heard the news of Joe Kubert’s passing. At first, I was a little shocked and taken aback, I mean, this was Joe Kubert, he’s always been with us. As soon as I got home and checked my comic news sites, like I normally do, it hit me. I’m not sure what it was, but seeing an image of Sgt. Rock and his boys made me tear up and realize that someone I had looked up to and drew inspiration from was no longer here. This was a man whose school I had hoped to one day attend and be taught by. This was a man whose war stories made me fall in love with the genre, even more so than Kirby. This man was drawing comics that looked and dealt with issues a decade ahead of its time. He was a storytelling master, pioneer, hero, idol and inspiration…and he’s gone. I will never meet Joe Kubert, I will never tell him how much he inspired me and made me want to push myself. The legacy he left with his two sons and his art school is more than enough to get by on, but the comic medium is a bit emptier without him. Still, Joe Kubert will never truly be gone as long as his art and lessons remain.
Thanks for the memories Joe
